No Cottage for old people

This is the weekend where Canadian can officially say it is summertime. A lot of us Torontonians will open up the cottage somewhere up north and enjoy some nature for a few days. What happens to the rest of us that do not a have a place to go?

Well, a good number of you decided to go out to the Linsmore Tavern and relive your youth with disco music. The room was packed with grandparents that still love to pull out their flashy wardrobe and add a bit of gaudy jewelry just to go out dancing. It is a good thing we have a band like the Boom Shaka Lakas to shake our booty too.

This band took time away from their home world of Planet Disco to fly all the way down here to entertain the troops of the disco finger, the bus stop and the Get Down. The only problem is the getting back up move. That did not deter this bump and grind crowd. This was their chance to relive their teen years again. The Linsmore was the hottest ticket in town!

Even though disco was a short part of music history, there was plenty of hits that came out of that period and the Boom Shaka Lakas played three sets worth of these one hit wonders.

There were the classics like, “The Hustle”, “That the way I like it”, and “Best of my Love”. The band even pulled out some of the great novelty disco songs like, “You Sexy Thing”, “Car Wash”, and we even took a ride on the Love Roller Coaster”.

Even the fashion sense from Planet Disco was 50 years old, with Bootsy Collins Jumpsuits to a dancing Queen and even a Cowboy on drums. This band looked loud.

The energy they brought to the stage helped everyone forget the outside world and completely dance your stress away. Songs like, “I love the night life”, “Shake your Booty”, and “Ring my bell”, added to the amnesia you wanted to feel this night.

This band has only been around for a couple of years, and they don’t have a lot of competition out there. So, for people who love disco, this band is a must on your to do list when you see them playing around this city.

They even brought up their original guitarist Don, who just added to the entire party atmosphere. Rocking our disco experience with Miss you by the Rolling Stones, got the audience singing the woo-oo-woo-oo-oo-oo part. Heck, they even got the audience to jump on board of the Love Train and dance throughout the entire bar and even outside to cool down a little bit. While all of this was going on, Don began preaching to the choir and united all of us in dance.

My favourite moment was when they went into the song “Disco Inferno”. Fraser on Bass grabbed a cowbell and walked outside the front window. You could see the band on stage with a flaming fire show coming off a cowbell from the behind the stage on the sidewalk. This band knows how to heat up a party!

This was the perfect party for the long weekend. It has been a while since I have witnessed an older crowd actually stay out and dance all night long until 1am in the morning. I have a feeling there will be a lot of people going out for a late brunch the next day.

  1. Re: No Cottage for Old People – Hey, who are you calling old?! As I recall you are no spring chicken – Ha! In any case I agree the Boom Shaka Lakas brought amazing energy to the bar and created an atmosphere of fun right through to the last set. Can’t wait to boogie with them again soon.

    • I am only a spring chicken with my attitude. As long as you are young at heart and love to dance, am I right?
