Modern-day Warriors: Geoff

Lately I have been on a roll discovering some great progressive rock bands in our city. There are just enough talented bands that play here to keep your nerdy math rockers happy. We have a great blend of classic prog as well as metal prog to keep our brains active.

In the case of Geoff, they come at you in a different manner. Like a stoned juggernaut, they produce a wall of sound that pounds a knuckle sandwich right into your soft face.

The opening song sounded like a hybrid between Soundgarden and Monster Truck. This song that they pounded into you is called “Submission Blues”. See what I mean about that knuckle sandwich?

The next song opens with a familiar classic rock riff. I swear I could hear the Immigrant Song buried in those chords. In fact, I am beginning to hear plenty of inspiration from plenty of the fabulous 1970’s Rock bands. The sound that is being produced comes from those low end monster riffs from a lot of the great Rockers.

I could hear all their heroes in these notes. We are talking about bands like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Blue Oyster Cult and Rush. I hope some of my readers for this article are older, because if you want a modern-day band that can produce the sounds you grew up with, Geoff may be your new favourite band.

This is a band that runs on solid jet fuel and propels you into the Space Rock galaxy for a power trip through your mind. The drummer had moment where I could feel the presence of John Bonham pounding his hammer to the Gods. The guitar player was wailing away looking for his next big anthem. The Bass player was doing his best impressions of Geddy Lee and Chris Squire.

The band is getting ready to release their debut CD soon. Blast Toronto is already on the case to review their new material, as soon as it comes out. My guess is that it will be here sometime this summer.

The band is very proud to share all their original music with us, and a new song called “Chameleon”. This one seemed like a pop song compared to their hard rocking list of other material. I found this song’s riffs to be very hooky and may find a bigger audience with colourful flavours emanating from these three spellbinders.

If you are a prog fan that loves longer songs, this band can accomplish that. They played one that surpassed the 10-minute mark.  It had all those great twists and turns that could keep your nerdy mind engaged.  They even created a supersonic ending that was a little mind blowing.

Just to help the older Rockers understand this band a little better, I could also hear moments of Thin Lizzy, UFO, Ted Nugent and even a bit of the Scorpions in their set.

If these names mean anything to you, then maybe it is time to check out a band that you can call your own… and that band is named Geoff!
