Jazz From Another Realm

With a drum beat resembling a strange funeral march, my mind told me to shut up and open up. We were about to go somewhere. The Emmet Ray is known for bringing in different styles of jazz and Lina Allemano’s Titanium Riot truly defies a category. The music seems to be based on a purely improvisational approach and can really teach you to be in the moment.
Some of her sounds were reminiscent of the late 1960’s Miles Davis during his Bitch’s brew era. Her choice of trumpet mutes was eccentric as well. She used both a cookie tin as well as the lid to add a very tinny sound to her musical moments. Her band members were on board for this ride into the unknown. We had Ryan Driver, Rob Clutton and Nick Fraser diving into their own world of obscurity and creating a mind hive that projected images I can only describe as:
Keyboards: Houston I think we a have a probing…
This is a passageway thru dimensions rarely explored…
Black Fire Ants that have already walked through the fire…
The sun sets over Neptune but leaves permafrost on a Plexiglas windshield…
Undiscovered tribes of Africa slowly die in the bush without witnesses…
Stay tuned in to white noise…
Chop Suey is continually being made as the world walks by the empty restaurant.
Now comes Set 2 with… Warm up is a bust; let’s chase that rabbit down the hole…
Jack Rabbit jack hammer jack in the cookie box…
She gets up like a dental assistant and fills the cavities with the dying breath of a bagpipe player…
Starlings swim through a bog of fog and regret their course of action…
A question mark keeps beating the drum as a traffic light turns red…
The gambit of confusion becomes very calculated and elation strikes up the band from 120 years ago…
During the final ten minute of the show, Zoe Pia gets up and begins to play her unique reeds of interesting sounds and then moves on to the clarinet where it seemed all at once they all just stopped as if the conversations simply came to an end. This was my experience watching a band that pushes the limit on how music is produced and listened to. It was very cleansing, and we got to re-enter the world again with a fresh new perspective.
