Bluebird bar
A little neighbourhood restaurant with quality beer is hosting an evening of quality music every Thursday night. The place is called Bluebird Bar and is located at 2072 Dundas St West. It seems the locals know about this place because it was packed with people. Some of them I have seen the last time I was there for Nate Mills who delighted the crowd with his humorous antics.
This audience was here tonight was there to witness the original talent of Kevin Breit.
Kevin Breit
In the last year I was able to see Kevin Breit in various other projects and every time he seems to shine brightly in that spotlight. He has a way of taking something pretty straight forward and turns it into a very tasty pretzel.
This night he started off with a simple country tune and a mandolin and recreates it with an obscure solo reference that woke up the audience members who didn’t know who Kevin was before tonight. This was a duet of Kevin and Kurt Neilson on Bass. They stood in the flickering ghost light that they brought along. The light was misbehaving as if to tell the crowd, this will be a bewitching performance.
Kevin brought his interesting sense of humour to the bar, because every time someone left he would stop and talk to them before they left.
Kevin even broke into an impromptu song about the Garbage truck that was carrying away the trash from right outside the window.
His choice of song mostly came from his own playbook and his little stories gave those songs more life. He dedicated a song to anyone named Delilah in the bar. There seemed to be about 5 or 6 Delilah’s in the room and Kevin let us know he was in the mood to smooch with her.
His song Megaphone was wonderfully strange while Johnny Dollar has a very spastic nature about itself. One of his instrumentals was filled with tension that it could have used a serious massage to get rid of all those knotty notes.
As time was coming to an end, Kevin did a dirty little ditty about making Hollywood movies.
He finished the evening with a very intense solo that snuck in a few seconds of “Third stone from the Sun”. There isn’t much that gets by these ears.
