TO Live
TO Live is doing something extraordinary. They are acting like a talent scout for the next wave of Toronto talent. Starting on October 23rd and running every Thursday until December 18th, TO Live is presenting different artists. Each week they will be presenting artists with very different backgrounds and sounds. If you are an explorer of music like me, this could be your weekly lunch break.
The series runs every Thursday starting at Noon. This is the kicker, these shows can happen at the Meridian Arts Centre or St Lawrence for the arts. You will have to check the listing to show up at the right spot. But don’t worry, if you do show up at the wrong spot you are only a block away.

Ley Vara
Ley Vara got a call from her manager asking her if she wanted this gig for Sound Break. Of Course, was her answer. How did this happen? The team at TO Live has put together a list of up-and-coming artists to showcase their raw talent in front of an intimate audience.
Let’s bring in young talented people to play in a well-known music hall. This is such a good way to inspire these artists to strive and develop their skills to hopefully play a sold-out show at one of these classy environments.

Ley’s voice was quiet. It was like sitting in a coffee shop, sipping lattes and having a one-way conversation. These are the stories that come from Ley’s memory.
Her song called, “For You”, is a classic bad relationship story.
Her other song called, “Tribute”, is a nod to all the happy love songs of the past. She chose to do this with the feelings of longing mixed with that quietness of being forlorn. Did I mention she has a quiet voice?
Could this be because of her worldly genes? She opened up and let us know, she is a unique blend of Indonesian, Polish and Finnish.
She was smart and pulled out some interesting covers songs from, Katy Perry, where one person knew the song. The other artists she covered was Boy Genius, Haley from Paramore, and Mazzy Star.
The moment I enjoyed was when she went from playing an acoustic guitar to pulling out her phone and began to play her backing tracks. Her sound became a little fuller, her harmonies began to add colour to the atmosphere. Her quiet voice was a little more confident and became more present.
If you give this artist a little more time to develop, I am sure these sounds will become bolder.
If you want to discover more about this artist, you can follow her on her instagram page:

A little side note. I sat near to a woman who was doodling something during the performance. When the show was over, I went over to see what she had done. It was a sketch of Ley playing her guitar. We must be in a creative neighbourhood, where artists gather other artists to create what they want to create. I hope this sketch artist is reading this and keeps coming back so I can watch her in action.
