Suzie Ungerleider’s New Music

Normally, I usually love telling people to go and discover their music. Well, this night at Hugh’s Room, I took my own advice and went to a CD Release party by Suzie Ungerleider. I really don’t know who she is, but she is releasing brand new music, and I want to hear this as people are hearing it for the first time.

Her brand-new CD, “Among the Evergreens” is filled with personal stories of her youth and the challenges she faced as she moved through time. It is also a time to reflect on that growth over the years and the unique wisdom you receive while going through these moments of interesting and spiritual augmentation.

She opened the show with the first song off this CD, “The Prize”. It is a song about growing up and acting tough, but over time that exterior fades away and only then can you reach for the prize.

With each song that she laid out in front of us, we all could take a nugget of her truth and find a way to fit it in our existence.

“College St” stood out for me, because it has that wide eyed look of when you used to dream big and then, for you to exist you have to stay within your own reality.

During the show Suzie was open about her life with her husband Cam. Like all marriages we have very loving and warm memories and moments when we are not so crazy about them. Her song, “Juniper” was a warm song about him and how he loves his cocktails. “I’m sorry and I’m right”, tells another story.

Suzie brought along two excellent musicians to accompany her on this evening. We had Brad Higgins on Bass. He kept it very simple and relaxed while he held all the foundation to these personal folk tales.

She also brought along a dear old friend, Nichol Robertson who simply added an introspective hue to add a special colour to these intimate folk tales. He tends to create very visual auras instead of just playing notes. He paints the room with the mood of the song.

Suzie comes off as a very honest and open person that is not afraid to talk about anything. In fact, I find artists really open up about their experiences with various drugs. Suzie opened up about a very interesting trip she had in Amsterdam with fellow musicians Whitehorse.

With her openness, she also shared her song called “The Wild”, a piece about her daughter who wants to discover her independence in this world.

Suzie is a very lucky artist to have such wonderful friends because she received her song, “Oregon”, with the help by her friend Bazil Donavon from Blue Rodeo.

By the end of the evening, the attentive audience look very satisfied, as if they just sat down and had a personal conversation with Suzie.
