Sleazy Street Sounds from Seattle

There was a bit of a freak show on Queen Street. There were three very different bands with three different sounds vying for the attention of a diverse audience. Each band has its own stage presence and there was even a plastic giraffe named Gira and a rubber chicken named Butter attending this evening.

With what felt like a slow hung-over sunrise, mystical tendrils engulfed the room, and the hypnotic presence began its organ dance again. If you haven’t seen Mihalyistic Entities yet, you should watch out for this band, because they bring original art rock energy to the stage that Toronto hasn’t seen in a long while.

They welcomed us to the freak show, with the presence of a mysterious silver cup and a strange mask that can turn a passive viewer into a maniac doing a St Vitus Dance until his demise.

It seems perfectly normal to watch a patron fall to his death and continue to watch a band with a corpse by your feet. Please, just don’t spill any beer on him.

Near the end of their set, they went into a song called, “Symposium”.  This one has a lot to it. It has progressive rock elements with good arena rock energy to it. There seems to be a battle of Rock and Funk between the guitar and Bass player that adds a lot of character to the song.

Well, if you came more for a straight 70’s Rock feel, The Young Scones did not disappoint. They had every kind of 1970’s rock riff smashing you in the face this evening.

The band was thumpy and bumpy as they sang about holes in their pockets. Their energy is raw and uncomplicated. Sometimes they looked like Neil Young having a seizure. Other times it was like watching AC/DC meeting Ted Nugent as he grabbed a whole lot of Rosie and slammed her into his Maserati.

The Young Scones played their single from last year called “The Sun”, which was as heavy as any good Led Zep song out there. They got so funky and punky they even had a plastic giraffe (Gira), dancing to their tunes.

My only criticism is they played the second worst version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds ever, next only to the great William Shatner, who destroys this song back in the early 70’s.

The headlining act drove all the way from Milwaukee, to get to Toronto. They hail from Seattle Washington, and they came to prove that Seattle still has a sound. This band is Call Beautiful Freaks!

What was witnessed was a Grungy, Punk band that grew out of a garbage heap with their ugly sounds. They even tossed themselves around like angry Marionette dolls lost in their own void.

This band has been doing this for about 15 years now, and they look like they will keep going because they love this lifestyle. They sang about birds, thank goodness there was a rubber chicken in the house to hear this one. They sang about the legend of DB Cooper and how he did nothing wrong. Heck, they even decided to do a pop song that was reminiscent of a Cranberries tune.

I am glad I stuck around until the end, because the last song was an exercise in total mental destruction. Stay tuned to Blast Toronto to help you find some of these freak shows when they pop up in Toronto. As the Band Marillion said, “All the best Freaks are here”!
