Peakin’ at the Beacon!

Well it’s a Friday Night and people want to head out to relieve a little stress. Toronto is filled with plenty of places to do this. One of those places is in the Parkdale neighbourhood and it is called The Bell and The Beacon. Take a walk up some stairs and you are transported to into a time capsule of a retro living room.

Side One

This evening the space was taking up by a Country band called Weeping Dave and the Diamond Boys. The place fits about 40 people and I felt like the 41st. The first half of the show I had to enjoy the view from about 3 rows back. I had no way of getting any good footage of the mob scene that was happening at the front of the stage. That was taken up by a crowd of females wanting to dance.

This was going to be a fabulous evening, because once I heard that twang, it sprang the crowd into action. All I could see was shoulder to shoulder movement.

Dave seemed to think that here are not enough drinking songs anymore, so he rose to the occasion and created one more with his song called “Happy Hour”. Hell, he even did another one called, “Born at last call”. This should be the great origin story of Weeping Dave.

Country fans were delighted that the band was throwing in some good old classics from the likes of George Jones. Even though these songs do have that energy to make you cry in your beer, I noticed the crowd getting a little rowdier with each song.

Side Two

When the band made its way through the crowd for their second set, Dave asked a woman how many beers did she drink between sets. Her answer was 15.  So, a song was born about drinking 15 beers. This was the kind on spontaneous energy Weeping Dave brings to his audience. He really knows how to connect with the people of the room.

I squeezed in at the side of the stage, so this is why you have some great photos of the night. The chaos of the evening was so close to the edge, anything could go super right or super wrong.

A couple of other fun titles to his set of crazy country songs were, “Sentenced to hard times”, and “She only loves me when she is drinking”. Well, there were plenty of women who would testify to that!

Dave was having so much fun that he wanting to take this audience home so he could keep hearing those wild cheers when he poured a bowl of cereal.

He didn’t have to worry, because that cheering continued as his shirt buttons popped open showing of all his manliness to a roomful of drunken women.

By the end of the evening, Dave just wanted to stop so he could drink with his fans. They didn’t let him off the hook, so the band pulled out the classic, “Hey Good Looking”.
