International Women’s Day at the Rivoli

What is Sundown Sessions

The Sundown Sessions is a musical platform that gives young talented artists a chance to perform on a legendary stage at the Rivoli. This happens once a month and usually has 5-6 artists on the bill. This is an opportunity to get a variety of talented people together and showcase their new material to try out on a real audience.

This is run by two women named Amy Craze and Tiffany Luv. These women made it their passion project to help grow very young talent. If you feel you are one of those artists that want to have a serious attempt at growing your craft, this is one way of getting that support.

You can fill out a form and submit it to these women. If they feel you fit in with their program you may find yourself on stage at the Rivoli very soon. Here is the link to the form you must fill out.

Cameron Tania

A young woman named Cameron Tania was first up and chose to sing all original songs. The first thing I noticed about her was that she as a very crisp and clear and sweet vocal sound. She seems to be a singer about the darker parts of life. She sang about addiction with a song called, “White Rabbit”. We all have friendship break-ups, and this one was named, “Alicia”. Heck, let’s throw a car crash in there for good measure, with her song called, “Exit 132”.

She is finishing off her new single called, “Lights”. You can find this out on May 4th, and she hopes it is a successful song. All I will say is May the 4th be with YOU!

Earth to Joie

This was a very cool moment, because Joie has been helping out with the Sundown Sessions and never let on that she loves to sing. She asked Amy if she could perform at one of these shows. Well, here we are and we are about to witness the arrival of Joie to the world!

She started of strong by belting out James Brown, “It’s a Man’s Man’s Man’s World”. What a song to perform on International’s Women’s Day.

Her second song is called, “Third Song”, and her 3rd song was the first song she ever wrote called, “Zombie”. I felt like I was in an Abbott and Costello routine of “Who’s on First”.

At the end of the set, it didn’t matter anymore, because when she pulled out her song, “Sunshine”, she gave the whole audience a warm hug that left us feeling good about life again.

Amy Craze

For those of you who are friends with Amy, we discovered her dirty little secret. Her real name is Jessica!? Yes, our fearless leader opened up and told us that her sister insisted that her name should be Amy, because there was a mean Jessica at school and she didn’t like that name anymore.

We can forgive Ms. Craze because when she opens up her mouth, a pure and remarkable sound emanates from her. She reminded me of all the wonderful 1970’s Folk singers of that era.

She was feeling a bit nervous because she and her piano player played stripped down versions of her songs. She also debuted a new song that she was unsure about. She had been working on this song for 2 years and she finalized it 5 days before the show. Even though she swears her knees were knocking, she did a fine job, and she should record this one soon.

If you are a fan of that 70’s folk sound, Amy can completely carry that sound. You will run home and put on some Joni Mitchell or Joan Baez to keep this party in your head.

Priyana

Priyana started this event by helping out Cameron on a song at the beginning of the evening. She came back with her own sound. Her voice has a thin and strong quality to it. I found her style of coming up with material for new music fascinating. In 2024 she was keeping track of how many times she cried. I found this a unique way to uncover a song. Well, in this case it really works. This is a fine song, and I will add a link to it at the bottom of the article.

With today’s open and generous youth who work to unburden their shortcomings or their challenges, these songs will become important to other likeminded listeners. Priyana has a song about Autism that could help people feel unstuck.

That is the beauty of Folk music, it is about the human condition, and these artists are picking up their pens and rewriting where we are, as a human race.

Dandelion Highway

Dandelion Highway has performed for The Sundown Sessions several times and will be back again. They are a young Folk group with solid harmonies and songs that just fill you up with warmth that you deserve in life. There seems to be a lot of caring and a sense of family when you hear their music. Their EP from last year called the Crossing should be with all your other folk albums. I have a feeling this band is just getting started for a succession of future hits. This is what is happening at these smaller shows. You get to watch the raw footage with a glimpse into the future with band that will make their mark in Toronto.

Make sure you make it out to one of these shows, so you can brag that you use to see this act before they became big.

Stay in touch with the Rivoli so you can find out when the next show will be,
