Reposado
I finally had a chance to check out a club I haven’t been too. It is called Reposado and it is located at 136 Ossington Ave between Queen and Dundas.
It is a long thin bar that has a sense of upper class without the attitude. The bands set up at the front of the bar by the front door and sits in darkness while the music is just filling up the room with a clean and crisp sound. During the week when they do have bands, the entrance is free. You only pay a small cover on the weekends.
Her Ghost
The sound of Her Ghost comes from three guys. Their sound is a wonderful mix of Surf music, a bit of Rockabilly and even a touch of Country sometimes. It is all instrumental music that last about 2-3 minutes each song. This is why you can hear 45 songs in one night. It’s like cramming for an exam.
Their set list is a perfect blend of original songs and a well established mix of cover songs from the 60’s and 70’s.
With the bar being dark, the music seems to emulate from the darkness and adds an air of mystery because it is difficult to focus on the actual musicians. For some reason this set up works for me.
With a name like Her Ghost, it seems reasonable that we really can’t see the band, but have to experience them through a veil of darkness.
Like the Ramones, this band just plays through their set list without talking to the audience. Again, Her Ghost like to keep things enigmatic as well as puzzling. When they decide to cover a song, it may take a few moments to figure out what song they are doing. This could be a new trivia game you can play when you see them live. Try and guess the title of the cover songs. Maybe they can include a special prize for those with the most correct guesses.
Cover Songs
If you love songs from the 60’s on, here are a few I heard them do this night.
Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves by Cher
Pleasant Valley Sunday- Monkees
Son of a Preacher Man- Dusty Springfield
Midnight Cowboy- Soundtrack
I won’t give them all away if you want to play this new game.
This is not a band with long jam sessions. They like it short and sweet. You mind will be filled with the joyous memories of your youth.
When can I see them?
Her Ghost is a staple on Tuesday nights at Reposado. They start at 8:30 and play 3 sets of music. They try to be there every Tuesday, but it would be best to see their Instagram page because they update it every week, and some weeks they are not there. This was the last time for about a month before you can go back and enjoy them. Blast Toronto would like to invite you to check out this cool band with cool vibes. Make sure you feed their Jack O Lantern when you go and see them.
