Cosmic Funk in a Den of wonders

BSMT254- The Final Frontier

BSMT254 was abuzz with anticipation of Mathieu Fiset’s first performance with his band Robojazz. The bass player Marc Decho has played there before and highly recommended this place to Mathieu.

The other two members that help created a new universe was Jen Lo on Keyboards and Renato Iturriaga on drums.

The night opened with a free form funk with Mathieu on a vocoder spewing his robotic character out as an introduction to a new audience. This is the kind of stuff that would make Herbie Hancock and Quincy Jones smile from ear to ear. It is a great blend of modern sounds with 1980’s synth jazz. The room was filled with a sense of vibrancy and colour.

The room is so intimate, and the music is so tight it was like sitting in the lap of luxury. Like sitting in a sports car and you want to see what this baby can do. Well, this machine can move!

Robojazz is a perfect blend of technical prowess and has the freedom to move around when it needs to. The free form parts added a space that open up your clogged passages.

With a song called, “Get the Groove right”, Robojazz computes and spits out a perfect groove to move your molecules.

Who is Robojazz?

Mathieu explained to the audience the concept behind the name Robojazz. Like any great nerd, this fictional character was born through the idea having a robotic life and looking for love. He wanted to slam together his nuts and bolts and make beautiful music to a Ribet(a female robot). So, he hits the dance floor of a space bar ( kinda like one you would find in a Star Wars movie) and creates cosmic drama. This is the theme to his next song, “Robojazz on the dance floor”.

This character was conceived when Mathieu lived and played in China back in 2015.

As the drama continued, Robojazz blended two songs together. The first one was called, “What now?’ and then slid into, “I am my own worst enemy”. I think this is the moment the character had to go into therapy and have a look under the hood. I think we may learn that this machine is made up of used parts of scrap and rubber bands. He was assembled by the manufacturing company of – Pew Pew Vroosh Beep Boop Vroom Ltd. (That was a shout out to Mathieu’s t-shirt).

Herbie Hancock

The band did of a cover of Herbie Hancock’s piece called,” Cantaloupe Island”. This was a nice departure from all the technical side of the show and focused on a really warm and heartfelt moment.

After all the high-tech wizardry of the show, it was nice to relax into this beautifully comforting cocoon.

Chick’s Pain

I won’t regurgitate the story of Chick’s pain, but for now this is Mathieu’s big hit song that went viral on YouTube. Whoever knows this band will always be waiting for this piece to be played. Heck, if you watch my Instagram post, you will notice even rubber chickens can’t resist this song. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DM5A4u6gR4G/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

The Encore

As the show was coming to a close, we were called back to see how our hero Robojazz was doing. With “Robojazz Again”, we got to the next chapter to see how he made out at the club with his Ribet.

All I can say is there is some serious cosmic drama and panic at the Disco.

The band finished the evening off with a paradox. The last song of the evening is called, “One More”. They really do leave you hanging and wanting one more. This chapter is now closed, and you will just have to reopen this infinite theatre the next time Robojazz comes to a club near you in a galaxy far far away.
