Cluck-cluck, music lovers! Baby Butter is back, pecking out a review of CINDER’s new EP, Something Strange and Cloudy Across a Crowded Room. This follows their last release, “Saucers for Eyes,” and oh my feathers, they’ve done it again!
This band has its feet firmly implanted into that dark Goth sound and knows which buttons to push to give you that uneasy feeling of falling down a dark rabbit hole.
As a fan of 80s music, this sound reminds me of the days of The Cure, The Chameleons, and a hint of Depeche Mode. While their sound isn’t all that romantic, as it does have a ritualistic edge to it. The impaired vision seems to pull you into a dark underworld and then asks you to surrender to their imagery.
Its not all dark, because we do have fun with their song, “Donovan’s Room,” where you can bounce around and forget about the outside world. That is what I enjoy about this band. They are creating a special world for you to completely lose yourself in.
“Hilt” feels like a song of young trauma and angst. It comes off as a song of surrender into a place of complete numbness. The music captivates the listeners into small dark spaces but makes them feel safe.
Picture yourself in a room full of creepy creatures knowing they will never bite you and you have your guardians of your personal hell.
“Another Beautiful Thing” is a great track that purposely rips beautiful things away from you. Like the Rolling Stones saying, “You can’t always get what you want”, this song goes one deeper and prepares you for a bleaker life as fairness is stolen away.
I am usually a very cheerful and happy chick on my farm, but I do understand the beauty of this album. Even though, this EP speaks of the gloomy side of life, it still carries a message that the people that listen to this band can still be good and beautiful, even with the cloudiness that surrounds them. Who knew this band can carry a spiritual message this way.

There are no rotten eggs here. In fact, I would use my eggs to bake a cake for all the listeners of this EP. Everybody deserves cake!
