Captains of Everything

Discovery

When I was researching what bands to go see and talk about, I was very intrigued about a band with the name, Captains of Everything. They are going to play Noonan’s this Friday night and I had other commitments. So, I put them on my back burner for now.

Then last week I went on a walking tour of the musical venues around Kensington Market. I met a woman named Ally Sunshine. She invited me out to see her as she was a guest at the Cameron House performing with Captains of Everything. WHA!!!

The universe aligned and I made my way downtown yesterday to see this band.

Captains of Everything

Let’s start with the band itself. It is made up of:

Andy Maize on Vocals

Aaron Comeau on Guitar and Vocals

Dan Mock on Bass and Vocals

Galen Pelly on Drums and Vocals

They did have guest musicians-Ally Sunshine on Piano and Vocals

Neil Quin on Guitar and Vocals

The Show

With a solemn note floating through the house, Andy’s tired voice stopped everything while people settled into the passionate cry that wanted to be heard. Well, they had my full attention.

We did find out about this really cool name. It turns out that Aaron wrote a song called Captains of Everything. It derived from his family who called him Captain Aaron. They thought he was a bit bossy when he was growing up. Well, we got to hear that song live.

Another cool song was about how artists steal from other artists until their pockets are full. This was taken from a deep conversation that happened between Dallas Good from the Sadies and Gord Downie from the Tragically Hip.

What I truly enjoyed about this band is how they work so harmoniously together. Each member plays the lead and then let it drift to another player to take over the lead. You don’t even notice it happening, you just know it works really well with these four players.

Each member got a chance to sing and perform songs that they wanted. Dan Mock told me before the show that he is trying out a brand-new song tonight and the rest of the guys were just going to be there for the ride. Was it good or a disaster?

Guest Stars

The second half of the show they invited Ally Sunshine and Neil Quinn to perform a couple of songs. Now Ally and Neil have known these guys for 15 years, so it was like a bunch of friends getting together and just having fun.

With Ally at the piano, she immediately took us into her world with her songwriting prowess. She reminded me of an artist I love named Victoria Williams.

Neil stepped up next with his song and turned into what felt like a lonesome cowboy journeying through the rain.

This pair stayed for two more songs. They pulled a rare gem from the Tragically Hip called “Flamenco”, which is a most underrated song from “Trouble at the Henhouse”.

They finished on a high note with a unique approach to The Band’s, “The shape I’m in”.
