A Charlie Brown Christmas

If you are a Baby Boomer or a Gen-X, you grew up watching Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is coming to town and Frosty the Snowman. But there was always something special about a Charlie Brown Christmas.

For me it was the tree scene. For others it was watching the kids dancing on the stage, or it was the cool music that this cartoon brought to the masses. As a kid, I didn’t know this was jazz music. I just knew that I loved it.

The Band

Kyle Sullivan, Teri Parker and Chris Kettlewell got together and decided to pay homage to such an iconic Christmas tradition.  The show opened up with the running joke that this performance was brought to you by the law firm of Sullivan, Parker and Kettlewell.

They opened the show with a slow reggae version of Glad Tidings. I guess they wanted things to stay warm on this cold winter’s day. The band better stay warm, because they are performing this show three times in a row at Hugh’s Room.

The Show

It’s 11am in the morning and the place was packed with families everywhere. This must be the crowd that quickly ate breakfast to go to the early show and then hit up a brunch somewhere after the show. Well, back to the show. The Holly and the Ivy went on deck next only to be followed up by a slow samba version of Rocking around the Christmas tree.

At least, I can finally report that I did not hear them sing “Let it Snow”. If you have been reading my Christmas shows, I heard that song everywhere I went this year. I finally escaped the snow this time. Bwah, hahaha….evil villain laugh!

The band snuck in Pebble Beach, which is not a Christmas song, but a song by Guaraldi Trio which have ties to Charles Shultz and Peanuts. He did the Soundtrack for A Charlie Brown Christmas.

This was the moment to strap yourself in and relive your childhood. They played the entire soundtrack from beginning to end. This was a time capsule opening up my past Christmas’ with my family. So, it is great to see so many families in Hugh’s Room reliving and creating memories right then and now.

Kyle eventually invited three young women to the stage whose names are, Penny, Natalie and Aleksandra. They provided those heavenly vocals to the classic “Christmas Time”. Here is a link to that moment.

The show evolved into even a bigger family event when Kyle asked if any other kids wanted to come and sing. Everyone was shy at first, but once that first child made his way to the stage, the floodgates opened at the front of the stage was overrun with kids and mostly Fathers.

While I was getting a good angle, I could feel the excitement of as parents beside me. I asked if one of the singers belonged to her. She said yes and pointed her out very quickly.

The last song of the show was Mariah’s “All I want for Christmas”. These young ladies did a fabulous job.
