Sub-Sessions 13

Sub Sessions

If you are the kind of musical explorer that loves to go searching for new and different sounds, the dude at Sub-Sessions could be a gold mine for your journey. He puts together a concert series that happens at BSMT254 every 2 or 3 months.

It is a concert that showcases diverse artists that are the creating a new way of presenting music. This is usually the raw material that eventually grows into a more accessible sound as it matures.  Personally, I love this young raw stuff because you get into sounds, phrasing and concepts that no normal band would even know how to touch. These are the pioneers of exploration looking for that elusive lost chord. Just try and remember a band like Nirvana who showed up on the scene with a raw sound that nobody understood at first but soon became popular. I like the stuff before it becomes popular.

Sacred Wound

With an opening that sounds like a winter storm, a tiny beam of lonely light circles the room like a small cry for recognition. It reached out to the frozen strangers standing right in front of it, trying to penetrate through the ice-covered feeling like a worn-out lighthouse.

Smog filled the tiny stage separating us from the cryptic messages that may have been there to save us. They created a storm that simply did not want to give up. Instead it was separating us out so the isolation would destroy our spirit.

This was just the first and only piece they played. It was very effective because emotionally they took me somewhere completely different.

Bog Moss

This band came all the way from Windsor just to do this to us,

Born from sonic fire, a rhythmic dance consumed and morphed our neurons to travel in a brand-new direction.

The band seems to have blended Hawkwind with the very early stages of Pink Floyd.  The second song open up like Love’s famous song, Seven and Seven is, before they felt the need to drag you into a liquid cave. Once they had you trapped inside their mesmerizing sound, they dug their euphonious claws deeper into your susceptible mind and did not let go.

This band comes off raw and primal and are looking to make plenty of noise that is looking for that elusive puzzle piece that will help you reach your own personal Nirvana.

Suspicious death of a horse

This was their debut performance. They opened their set with an improvisational funky jam that got very serious by the time they reached the second song.

They presented a vision of the end of the world, and the crowd loved it. I think even REM loved it. By the time the end of their set was beginning to appear, they slaughtered us with a doom metal vibe that kicked our ass. This is the kind of band that will ram their sound down your throat, but you drink it like medicine.

This was one hell of a debut performance. If I see them playing around, I will go out of my way to see them again.

They finished the set with a Protest the Hero song. This band is clean and mean and all machine.

Paper hats

From the opening moments this band disconnects you like a plug from the wall. Their loudness is like screaming in a windstorm and they are constantly pushing you backwards. They create a sonic dissonance felt like a hysterical child scolding his parents for being unfair.

Their sound is hard to pinpoint. The compositions felt like a computer program with a couple of faulty circuits and chaos began as the sound was misfiring in any direction.

There were moments where their exploration felt like the trail led into a hot jungle where you become entangled in vines and small vicious creatures. This trail led to a very rocky path that just tore at the soles of your feet as you struggled to find your way to a more comfortable place.

Sub-Session-Reprise

Where there you have it: four unique bands exploring the space of sound. Could it use more cowbell, well that would be up to you to decide.  Each band brought something completely new and different. That is what makes Sub Sessions special. They are on a mission to continue to bring you cutting edge band that are brave enough to make music on a new canvas. You will not find any top 40 hits with this group. It is all about going where other bands fear to tread.
