Burning down Ted’s Collision

Ted’s Collision

This was my first time to Ted’s Collision located at 573 College St. It is a long thin and dark dive bar that has a private section at the front for people who just want to drink and the back where you can rock out to your favourite bands.

It is a mish mash of a diner and dive bar living together. The décor seems disposable. It you accidently break a table or chair it is easily replaceable for the next day. Because nothing really matches the place matches up pretty well with its chaos.

And with that said, we move onto the chaos of the night.

Cinder

I own a Cinder Ep, but this is my first time seeing them live. They walked on and open the night with “Turn it around”. It is a song that floats down like a black fog to invade your personal headspace and then slowly fires you off into the higher stratosFEAR! By the second song I was surfing on a purple planet.

I am beginning to like this band. It is the day before Halloween, and they dressed for the occasion. The singer dressed like a slumlord while the drummer dressed like the singer. There was also had a giant banana with a very hairy dude who could be anything hairy. One woman said he was Chewbacca. I thought he was a kind of ape while someone else thought he was a caveman. Just let your imagination run wild during this holiday season.

Just when you think you have their sound almost figured out, they come back with a new song that takes you into a brand-new direction. They seem to be explorers of various soundscapes.

At one point I felt I was inside a brand-new Lou Reed song. The next thing I know I was being hypnotized by a droning yet mesmerizing sound. Each song was a new adventure.

They finished off the set with a song about a cel phone and that just felt like a wrong number.

The packed house didn’t seem to care as they began jostling around the room hoping to get a little mosh pit going.

Cinder enjoying Halloween:

Burner

Well, if this crowd wanted a mosh pit, Burner is the band that can help you out with this dilemma. They started their sound check with a little Slayer, “Reign in Blood”. If that doesn’t say future mosh pit nothing does.

They started the set with what felt like a gloom and doom rap song that belonged to sewer rats. It was grimy and shady, and it went bump in the night.

After that they got down to business. Like Motorhead, this band seems to balance out the sound of Metal with raw Punk. They always seemed to add one extra ingredient to make this concoction hard to swallow. It is dark and dank and, in your face, so wear some face protection.

The twisted parts of the songs had a Faith no more edge to it. It is unfiltered and raw with no apologizes.

Near the end of the set, he mentioned a song called “Hyena”. It was very clear this is their favourite song to play for the crowd. The laughter was a sinister as a hyena. The fact that he walked into the crowd to challenge the audience and the response was full reciprocated.

The singer moved like a predator to get a full reaction and wanted the crowd to slip into a neurotic frenzy. Mission accomplished.

I just hope these satisfied customers have enough strength to do it again on Halloween night.
