Preparing for Halloween

I am a huge Halloween fan and I try to see a few shows before the big day. It’s the pre-game show. It’s the tailgate parties before going in for the game. I like seeing people dress up and get creative with their costumes. When you have three Heavy Metal bands that also like to dress up for work, this is the show I want to go to.

The Android Meme

If you have a fear of the future, this may not be the band you would want to see live. The show opened with a dystopian speech to breakdown our frail safety net that is our mind and reality. This band is here to show you the future and it could be haunting or exhilarating, depending on your mindset.

Like the Matrix, the opening had a couple of glitches. The band reemerged like the BORG and put themselves back together quickly and pounded their futuristic sound back into our feeble minds.

The band has plenty of diverse songs and the one that stood out for me was, “Deep State Daddy” This tune seemed to open up your paranoid thoughts and create conspiracy theories to feel uneasy about.

I found it interesting that they would choose a very obscure cover song in their repertoire.  They chose a Faith No More song call, “We care a lot”. This is a song that the band did before Mike Patton joined the band. If you didn’t know it was a cover song, The Android Meme could pull this off as one of their own.

The set finished off with a fun version of “Ghostbusters”. I challenge any band to try and make this a serious song.

The Android Meme Live:

Frail Fragment

Frail Fragment started their set off slowly, like a leech looking for the perfect place to go and suck your blood. The sound was heavy and moody and they kept thing at a mid-tempo pace. This band isn’t out to be the fastest or loudest band in town.  They just want you to feel off balance when you listen to their form of pain therapy.

This is the kind of music that gets under your dirty skin and then decides to throw you out of that sleazy club just to watch your blurry eyes lift up from the dirt.

I loved their song called, “My Confession”, because it felt like an ugly truth coming out.

Part of this ugly truth was having the guitar player dressed up like Alice in Wonderland while he was trying to stuff you down the rabbit hole with toilet plunger. I guess they hate clogs.

They finished off strong with some great primal scream therapy at the end of their set. This will be the end of their sets for a while, because they are going back into the studio to record their sixth album.

Frail Fragment Live:

Blood Opera

With sad chilling music to open the show, a topless goat from the underworld rammed its ugly head at the crowd as it fed audience members special milk from the honeydew melons presented on stage.

This show quickly became a covenant for the absurd. This is Toronto’s premiere ghoul band and if you haven’t seen them yet buckle up for an interesting ride.

Let’s make this commentary easy for you. If you are an Alice Cooper fan, this is the band you want to see time and time again.

They have a stage show that is wildly entertaining with songs and stage props that fit like an OJ Simpson glove.

If you are hungry they will serve you brains. If you come to the show clean, prepare for a dry cleaning bill. If you love to pour your guts out, guess what, so do they!

I would love to share every ritualistic antic in their show, but I want to save some surprises for you when you go and finally see them live.

Blood Opera Live:

Until then, dress up and enjoy Halloween the musical way. Find a club and go be ridiculous with your friends on Friday night!
