Getting Punked at the Monarch!

The Monarch Tavern was the place to lose your hearing as well as your mind. There were three acts going at top speed to gain your attention. The place was packed and the crowd was anxious to get things rolling.

Hormoans

Just like the name implies, this band is full of unresolved angst and in need of a tremendous release! This band is loud and hard and ready to enter any opening spot on a Rock and Roll bill.

These guys do not moan, they scream blue murder and their guitars and drums are their weapons of choice.

It is a solid mix of hard rock and punk rock with all the sweaty moves. If you stand too close to the bass player, he will sweat all over you. This dude is so high energy sometimes; I don’t if he knows where he is playing. He is just happy to use up all this excess energy.

In fact, the audience stood away from the stage unsure if they got too close, what would happen to them. Good job guys.

This is Hormoans:

Jules is Dead

This was an act I was intrigued by. She had moments of power pop, hard rock and post punk. The band consisted of Jules, and the drummer. The rest of the band came from technology. I guess that how the kids do it today until they get a full band. You have to do whatever you can to grow as an artist. The best way is to constantly develop your stage craft and the rest will follow.

She clearly had some friend show up because there were some girls losing their s#!+ at the front of the stage. Once she picked up a guitar, the place got excited because she just made this performance more real. I felt her channeling her inner Avril Lavigne. A new song that she was trying out went from a straight rock piece into an exercise in primal screaming. She treats her different styles of music like a large closet filled with different music wardrobe with each song.

As my little side note, I found her line- “Nobody can hurt you, when you hurt yourself”.

Is Jules dead?

Jayniac Jr

Have you ever heard of Brass Against? Well I would compare this Toronto band to them. The cool thing is you don’t have to wait around to see Brass Against to come to Toronto. Go see Jayniac Jr instead. They play Toronto as well as other towns around Ontario often.

This is a Band that immediately gets the Funk out on the stage and keeps it there while they stick their punk rock attitude in your face. Unlike typical Punkers that are out to scare you with their bad attitudes, Jayniac Jr seems to celebrate life in a healthy and boisterous way. This band call also mix it up with Hard Rock, Ska and Hip Hop.

You know this is going to be a very interactive show when the singer and the sax player jump off stage, lock legs and dance in a circle. See my photo.

They mentioned that they just sold out of their new vinyl but still had merch to pick up after the show. They were so happy about this that some of their merch was just given away.

Soon after that a dude named Marcus jumped up on stage to perform with his own horn. It was a small horn that sounded more like a glorified Kazoo.

Well, this show was just getting better and better. Throw in some Linkin Park with a horn section and the party just keeps on ramping up. By ramping up I mean Jay would leave the stage and lay on his back whole he kept slappin’ da BASS!

Nobody wanted to leave after the band was done, so Jay and the Drummer who front another band called Sixteen Scandals, came back and finished the evening with one of their songs.

This was a great evening of getting all you’re pent-up emotions out. The crowd was quiet and left tired and satisfied. That is how Jayniac Jr likes to get it done!
