Blumarelo single release: Bones All Around

The Story

Set in 1960s Estonia, “Bones All Around” is a story about seeking freedom and creative expression against a backdrop of restriction. The song explores the lengths people go to for the things they love, specifically the historical practice of manufacturing contraband music using discarded x-ray film, known as “ribs records.” This story of seeking “gold” among beets and potato sacks is a tribute to the resilience of music and the human spirit.

Upon examining the lyrics, you’ll find several Easter eggs, including:

  • “burnt out in the middle,” referring to the creation of a hole for the record to spin with a cigarette butt, as was typical for ribs records.
  • “while Nero played his fiddle,” connecting the ancient Roman story of Nero playing his fiddle to the oppression of the Soviet Union.
  • “Ob-la-di and ob-la-da,” a tip of the hat to The Beatles, whose song of the same name was said to have been bootlegged behind the Iron Curtain.

About the band: Blumarelo defines their sound as “multinational rock,” a fusion that stems from the diverse geographical roots of its members. The band includes Vincent Teetsov (USA/Brazil/Estonia) on vocals and rhythm guitar, Renan Deodato (Brazil) on lead guitar, Mauricio Gamboa (Mexico) on bass, and Julious Nshaba (Uganda) on drums. Together, they create bookish, feel-good songs that inspire audiences to dance and dream.
