Hugh’s Room
Spencer MacKenzie is excited to be introducing us to his brand-new record- “Empty Chairs” and started his show with a strong and soulful blues beginning. His attitude was open and had that he wants to be seen and heard. Throughout most of the concert he kept his sound rock hard with new gutsy blues guitar riffs.
With his entire solid rocking set list, it was the emotional entanglement that kept things flowing nicely all evening. The band would fill the room with love, anger, hurt, cheekiness and even joy. His song “Empty Chairs” is a protest song about his view of today’s world. Normally the blues don’t get very political, but in today’s world, Spence has something to say.
With songs like, “Empty Chairs”, “Trip”, “Don’t know where I am going” and “Evil”, Spencer seems to be trying to navigate his music through some really tough moments in history and the uncertainty of the future.
The one certainty is that Spencer MacKenzie can pull off some of today’s coolest blues riffs around. He is taking on this mantle like a new art form and is trying to shape it to fit his personality. He has a way of taking something a little wild and keeping it contained within its structure. I hope he will loosen up one day to pull off real face melting riffs and have your face all over the sidewalk cooking like a fried egg on the sidewalk. (Baby Butter told me to write that part).
This was the first time I have seen him live in an indoor setting. His performance was much plumper, and his vocals were a lot crisper and the overall vibe was filling in a fuller spectrum of sound.
You could really hear the dense curtness as he went into a sense of salvation, with the song, “Baptized by the Water”.
Near the end of the show and after a full-on Rocking experience, Spencer slowed things down for the first time with a slow song. It was a rich journey while you meandered your way through an emotional labyrinth.
This is just a simple note to young people who love Blues music. Spencer is a young man with a long career ahead of him. This is one of those artists that could be someone you follow and grow up with. He is only four albums into his career and has plenty to give to us in the future. He does play in Toronto often, so make it out to one of his shows and have a BLAST! Because I said so…
