Is Heather Luckhart the next Wild Woman?

Kensington Sound

Heather Luckhart organized a private event to showcase her new material called Wild Women Blues. Her place of choice is a deeply hidden gem in Toronto. It is called Kensington Sound and it is a recording studio on Baldwin St in Kensington Market. It took me a while to find it, but once I got upstairs, I saw the intimate space and found my seat for the show.

After the show, I was lucky to meet the owner, Vezi Tayyeb and he gave me a tour of his place. After walking down a tricky hallway, I walked into a full-blown studio. I felt like I just walked into the Batcave. You would never know this place existed, but it has and is still creating amazing sounds since 1972. How many musicians have recorded here? I think I am already onto my next story.

Wild Women Project

When Heather made it to the stage, she opened up the show with a full story of why she is so passionate about this project. Over time Heather has experienced and studied women who shaped the blues. These are women that have not made a huge dent in the history books but with some research, these women shaped how the blues and women have played its role in history.

One of the stories she told was when she went down south to find a true dive bar to have an authentic blues experience. Well, her chaperone and she found that place only to be turned away because of being a white woman. I guess years of oppression, black people still have trouble trusting white folk. So, Heather sat in the parking lot and sang the blues. Once she was heard, she was invited in to have her authentic experience open up.

This is just one example and story Heather laid out for her audience. All the stories were fascinating. I will not go into other details, because once Heather decides to tour with her new album, everyone who goes out to see her will be transformed by these stories of music history.

Her Debut Performance

It was very clear that this was the first of many future shows for this new project and Heather and the band were really excited to finally get around to sharing it with more people. Each member of the band was totally on to give credence to a part of the past that rarely sees the light of day.

Heather’s band consists of Eric St Laurent on Guitar, Andrew Stewart on Bass, and Ethan Ardelli on Drums.

The theme of Wild Women came from the two places. The first was the female mavericks who sang the blues. These were gutsy women who had to challenge authority just to get their music heard. This was not an easy road for a woman to take. They often were shut down or turned away just because of their sex.

Speaking of sex, the song choices Heather made for this project was of the sexier kind. These songs had plenty of innuendos and straight forward raunchiness that could possibly be offensive to some people. This is just another reason these women had it tough. The content may have been too much for the public to handle back in the day. By today’s standard these are just really fun songs with some dirty words.

Between Heather’s playful nature and the bands doing killer solo’s, these songs will have a new breath of life as it makes its way into this millennium. So, the question is when will the public get to hear these songs live?

The evening finished off well, when Heather passed around a bunch of cups and a bottle of Jameson so we could all have a drink and toast the last song, which happens to be called Wild Women Blues. This was one of the best house parties I have been to this year!
