Matt Goodluck- Portals

Imagine yourself wanting to experience a world of new sights, new sounds and the weightlessness of travel.  For a bird that can’t fly, I find this very tantalizing. Can you imagine a new world filled with Portals? Well Matt Goodluck has and he is inviting you along to experience some new wonders.

This is a New Age electronic chimera of open thoughts and relaxing imaginings.

If you are a fan of Tangerine Dream and early Pink Floyd, this offering from Matt should be in your collective thoughts. Being a young chick, it feels as if I was travelling back to the egg.

The Portals

These are just my musings as I listen to this. I am sure you will travel to your own fulfilling destinations. I just look forward to getting out of my chicken coup, and this is one great way to do this.

The opening “Shifting Sand” is not of this earth. It seems to come from the red sands of Mars and these Arabs travelling through this desert are the real aliens in this piece.

“Dark Waters”, from the opening note I immediately felt as if I was underwater and exploring the vastness of this 3 dimensional ocean.

“Synergy”, is just a beautiful intertwining of sounds. As we get near the end, you could feel how it unravels in front of you. It is like watching a painting as an emotional movie.

“After Hours” was a surprise for me. I thought Matt was going to bring in some kind of house music and distort this entire recording. He kept to his continuous journey and brought me to a lonely cab driver scouring the streets of some sleazy part of town.  He picks up a fare under neon lights and transports her to a backstreet club. This one was a cool and unexpected journey.

I won’t go into each song, because after all this is your journey. I am just a small bird with a big imagination.

Overall

Matt Goodluck has a very clear stream of consciousness and carefully places each and every sound where it should be. His use of recorded voices really helps to engage the listener into some of the stories.

The overall feeling of this recording is very colourful and visually pleasing. He keeps the pace relatively slow so it gives you time to look around and relax into each one of his creations.

This is the kind of record where you want to take a mental vacation from the harsh realities of the world. You and I both know we need plenty of that today.

I just put on my headphones and forget that there are some big bad wolves roaming around, but I don’t care because I can just choose a portal to get lost in.
