As a young chick, all I can say is Holy Mother of Hens! This is a fresh egg filled with all the goodness of the Blues.
Angelique and her family band have put together 15 new songs and each one of them has its own special flavour. They now need to make a carton that holds 15 eggs worth owning.
The Songs
The record starts off with a smoky and sultry undercurrent of sweaty unresolved energy. This eye popping opener is called “Sugercane Jukejoint”. If this was a Def Leppard song it would be, Pour some sugarcane over me, if u know what I mean…
“Escape” features Christone “Kingfish” Ingram”. It is a sweet gospel blues tune simply looking for a way out. It is very smooth and washes over you like light coming through the trees.
“Gimme what you got” is big, fun and bouncy. The band pulls off a great retro 60’s sound with that old sense of joy.
“None Tonight” well that’s what you get when you come home smelling of liquor. Hey guys, this is definitely a song that you have heard once or twice in your life. Well, then we quickly slip into PT 2 of the same theme with, “We’re Over”. Angelique really plays the angry and disappointed woman well in this song, as she kicks your sorry ass to the curb.
“Dance for me” brings me back to the old movie “Angel Heart” with its steamy longing that waits in the wings hoping for a real sign of passion. No amount of lemonade will quench the thirst of this song.

The Moods
This new blues release is something blues fans have been waiting for. The diversity of themes and emotional states will satisfy your impassioned emptiness.
It is an emotional buffet of slow passion, sweaty thoughts, anger, and disappointment. The other side is balanced with fun and joy mixed with hope. Overall, I feel this record is a state of mind for Angelique. Her attitude is filled with, you may knock me down, but I will get back up and stand a little taller the next time you see me.
She approaches each song with the precision of a surgical preacher. She gets under your skin and uncovers the rawness of that is brewing inside each one of us. She knows when to help release the emotional states at the right moment.
The geographical energy of this record does not come from Ottawa, where she resides, but from the Deep South where the Blues were born. You can really feel the authenticity of creating a modern blues album while paying homage to the birthplace of this music.
I wonder if she needs a young chick like me to come and peck out a song or two on her next record, because this band is just getting warmed up for a long career.
