A short day 2
Normally I would go out and see 3 bands each day when NXNE is going on. I was out photographing all day and could only make it for one band. The good news is that rushing downtown to catch anything turned out well. That band turned out to be a Montreal band named Suckerpunch
Suckerpunch
After the band performed their set at Supermarket, I had to ask how long the band has been together. It turns out the band is only three years old. This really surprised me because these guys looked like veterans of the stage for far more than three years.
Their style of music is a strong mix of post-punk mixed with pop music. Their energy is pure octane fuel that created a sense of wild abandonment. With their whirls and twirls and them leaping like happy gnomes, Suckerpunch was like watching a chaotic version of the 20-minute workout. In fact, at one point I was using my fisheye lens on my camera to get some close shots and almost got knocked out by the guitar player. Even though the player saw me, it didn’t slow him down from flaying his guitar around and nearly hitting me many times. That is the pitfalls from being a concert photographer. Once I almost got knocked out from people stage diving at a Napalm Death concert. I got plenty of boots to the head that night.
With that said, this is a photographer’s dream job. There is an endless supply of amazing photographs from these guys. You just have to hit the right moment. So, for every 100 photos, there is the potential to nail one or two fantastic shots. I dare you to bring your camera and try this next time they are in town.
In fact, enthusiasm is not an enthusiastic word to describe how much fun these guys are having on stage. For five guys who all love to rock out, leap around and pull every kind of rock pose out there, this band needs a bigger stage to perform on.
I brought Butter chicken to the show, because she loves this kind of music. As she is sitting by the stage and rocking out, one of the guitar players picked her up and flung her about only to have her stage dive into the audience. She was so stoked to be a part of this rocket fueled show!
The band wished Toronto a happy pride month and then went flinging into the audience and started a guitar mosh pit. How much fun can Toronto have? Suckerpunch delivers the goods all the way from Quebec. So, the next time you see this band in our events calendar, you have to mark it down to go and feel that vibe.
