For the past year and a half, I have been following an artist name Jerry Leger. I have seen him as a solo artist live. I have seen his band The Del-Fi’s live. This time I went to see a new twist on his live performance as The Psych-Fi’s. If you go back to the beginning of the year, I put my top ten albums of 2024 together, and the Psych-Fi’s album Can Con made it to Number 1.
Well Jerry and his mighty band of explorers decided to debut at the Drom Taberna with their new album and see how it goes. This is a band made up of five players. On the album there were 18 players in a state of pure conciseness. They loosely jammed together and created five incredible songs for their latest album. Now I get to witness this music live.
When they hit the stage, the sound slowly slithered its way through the curious crowd like a python looking for a way to hypnotize the crowd.
With their opening song, The Psych-Fi’s were having a Rock and Roll party in the funeral home. That was a great statement to open up the mind-bending show that was unfurling in front of us.
With the next song, the band were sounding Dylanesque and happy. It was as if Bob Dylan himself was sitting next to you with a reefer in his hand and blowing mystic smoke in your face.
Just as you were getting into a groove, the band decided for the third song to pull out their 15-minute epic song, “Alone in a room of Mirrors”. This is the moment where you truly fell down the rabbit hole, and you didn’t want to climb out. Being a band, where improvisations is a common occurrence, the middle section went into a gospel, washing of the water, kind of vibe.
The love continued as Jerry went into his one-line song called, “You know that I love you”. This Bolero-like song reminds me of the Beatles experimenting with different ways of saying the same thing. Remember the song, “Why don’t we do it in the road”?
The band finished off the first set with the Shirelles hit song, “Will you still love me tomorrow”. This was a very sad country version versus the Shirelles heartfelt pop version.
When the band came back, they did play one of Jerry’s solo songs from 2023, “Nowhere Town”. This song reminds me of a small town with its dark lonely secrets.
Another song from Can Con,” A song for the Vultures”, felt very skeletal as the musician’s bleakness picked the leftover meat off of the song’s bones. You can really feel the emptiness of this carcass as you just stared at it.
I have to mention the newest member of the band named May. She played a very honest saxophone as she guided the songs with her solos. I could hear some Pink Floyd as well as some Supertramp moments. It just added enough familiarity to lock onto, with this band who loved going off and exploring new territories.
For me personally, I love their version of Bob Dylan’s, “One more cup of coffee”. They dove deep into an extended slant looking for the need of escapism. I think Bob would love this version.
It is not often you can see a live psychedelic country band that can drift into luminous clarity and a free-flowing stream of consciousness. So, for music lovers who love to drift away for a couple of hours, this may be your band.
