The great thing about Toronto is that it attracts a lot of out of town bands. Southern Ontario is littered with some of the best original bands that are looking for a loyal following and two of them showed up at Sneaky Dee’s to open for Cane Corso.
Vox Confidential
Even though we are well past Halloween, Vox Confidential brought the creepy factor out on the first song as if we were being invaded by Martians from the 1960’s. If you love campy music from the 60’s that have a psychedelic surf sound to it, Vox Confidential should be a band you go out and seek. This band is from Kitchener, so when they come to Toronto, grab you Nancy Sinatra boots and go walking to their show.
This evening the band played a bunch of obscure cover songs for that era. It made me want to do the Bat-Toosee. Remember that dance from the Batman and Robin show! Wham! Pow!
My favourite song was their version of “Liar,Liar”, by the Castaways. There full set was really campy, fun, and nostalgic. Emjay who leads this band was the singer in a Toronto group years ago called Moon Junk. She has then moved away and stared this band which continues where Moon Junk left off.
The last song of the evening they did an original song called, “Journey to the core of the Earth”. This was a cool song that had a fabulous psychedelic ending. With all the swirling sounds this band created I was left feeling dizzy and a little spaced out. Who needs drugs when you have the power of Vox Confidential in your head?

Sugar Report
The next band to make the trek to Toronto was virgin artist, Sugar Report from Hamilton. From the moment they got on stage they let us know this was the first time they were playing the Big Smoke!
From the first few moments of their first song, this band reminded me of a happy version of the Sex Pistols. The energy was high and the sound was not offensive. It was joyful hard rock.
Sugar Report had a level of sweetness to it, that if you bought into their sound right away, you may develop diabetes…Hahaha.
This hard rock act seemed to even have a friendly community supporting them. They had a family kind of feel to them. This became apparent when the singer told us that he wrote one of these songs with this Dad.
In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mother of the drummer wasn’t in the audience supporting her son. I may kid them about how sweet they are, but they can still Rock Well, like a family painting…get it…Rockwell?
I must mention as well, their Bass player Dusty couldn’t make it to the show so Tim stepped in to save the day. That’s what good friends are for! That’s sweet!

Cane Corso
Toronto based Funk Rock band Cane Corso started their show with an odd, what I am calling a Sesame Street Countdown. During the song they were singing 1,2,3,4,5, are they full of jive? Well they did bring their flavour of Funk to the stage. You could tell by the very cool bass player and his funked up guitar.
In fact he was the cool cat of the bunch. He brought both a laid back approach as well as funkadelic groove when he needed to. You could tell by the satisfaction in his face.
I have to hand it over to the lead singer Eric Montpool, he really brought this party along like a long steady boil until it exploded at the end of the set. I will explain as you read on.
The band has a strong balance of both Rock and Funk. Their song Monster Truck was a great example of building the pace and then Eric began to almost convulse by the end of the song.
They got the crowd in dancing mood when they pulled out, Rick James’ Superfreak! It did get freaky and the crowd moved in closer to grab the vibes. This song definitely got the crowd hopping like penguins.
They continued their shenanigans by doing a song about nothing, nada, zippo. I hope they call this one the Seinfeld. As the songs were progressing, the singer was showing only signs of completely spazzing out. In fact, he should do an exercise video called Spazzercise with Eric. At this point, I could only see this guy as a miniature version of Mike Patton from Faith No More with his herky jerky movements. They were unpredictable and fascinating to watch.
By the end of the set Eric jumped into the audience and created a feeding frenzy amongst the piranhas watching him. I have to admit this band really know how to pace their show like masters.
