Recently, I was invited to a party that was introducing the brand-new album by the Toronto based band Mute Sounds. It happened at hidden gem called the Burdock brewery.
What made this party special were the artists that have been helping Mute Sounds organize this new chapter in their life. First there is Ricardo Araujo who has done the photographer for the band. You can find his work on Instagram under to_photography. Then, there is Carla Antunes who did the painting that is now the cover for Mute Sounds new album called Northern Lights. You can find her on Instagram under carlacaetano.antunes
As people were enjoying the art show put on by these two artists, an unveiling of the album cover happened. This was the first time anyone including the members of Mute Sounds saw her work. It was clear from the moment of the big reveal; Carla hit a home run with everyone. The band members were very moved by the look of the final product and were incredibly grateful to have this piece represent this new period in their musical career.
The Concert
At 9:30 Mute Sounds took to the stage to now share their brand-new music live for a crowded room of anxiously excited people, me included. The one thing I know about this band is they create hard rock music instrumentals that tell an emotional story.
Well, I can honestly say for people who like their music heavy and hard, this is something you will want to explore. The band started with a rousingly heavy Overture of heavy swirling sounds that created a whirlpool that sucked you down into a rabbit hole. They enticed you to spiritually crawl inside to look for intellectual treats.
They started the next song called “Saga”, which is a story about the band. Well, this natural song started off with a cascade of watery appreciated emotions and soon grew into mountainous monolith that raised your spirits to the sky.
If you think that was all their tricks, you soon found out they could bring you into a state of depression and worry that slowly turns into a panic attack. It was like facing an overwhelming monster.
As your senses were thinning out you may have felt as if you were tripping through an electric minefield. This was like being a part of the rise of the machines. It was Science fiction drama, mixed with cosmic paintings of doom and gloom and even hope all at the same time.
I felt I was slapped into a musical sandwich made by Tool and being spread across the bread by Rush. There were progressive and heavy metal moments. They were a solid wall of sound that was constantly being pushed in your face. Do you resist or do you surrender?
The band’s new album created epic journeys for the heart and mind and soul. It all depends on how you let them in. I think that is the key to their purpose. So, with no further ado, here is the link to the new album. Put your headphones on, turn off the world for a while and deafen yourself to Mute Sounds!
Here are some photos of the evening:
