Burning Bright at Hugh’s Room

We just celebrated the 4th Reconciliation Day in Canada, and I have noticed a surge in Indigenous music finding its way into our musical fabric. Recently I have been touched by such artists like Aysanabee, Julian Taylor, Tom Wilson, Gary LaRocca, David LaRonde and Sultans of String’s new release-“Walking through the Fire”.

Well, now I have been opened up to Twin Flames who put on a show that simply cleansed everyone’s soul.  Chelsea June and her husband Jaaji are a perfect pair that charmed the audience with their open and honest banter. They didn’t even play a note yet and they had us smiling and relaxed as Chelsea began to start the show by playing a special healing flute that just opened up the spirit world within seconds.

Their choices of songs were deeply rooted in our human nature and connected us to a larger dimension. In fact, their song, “Native by Nature” was a prime example of this style of playing. Jaaji hoped we had suspenders that held onto our socks, because they were about to be blown off. How does a folk duo blow your socks off?

This is a duo that can take simple instruments like a traditional drum and an acoustic guitar and throw you into a different dimension. They brought the spirit of the earth and heaven close enough to you to touch. Their sound engineer is the silent partner as he added his part that really took you into a spiritual Quantum field to fully experience a grandness that you don’t hear often. In fact, there is only one other band that I know of that can produce a sound similar to this. This band is called Slowdive.

They were here to promote their new release, which will be happening soon, called “Hugging the Cactus”. The first song they played from this album is called “Bones”. It was like having a skeleton in your closet and you had to work through your pain to make peace with it. A lot of their stories seem to have this theme. In a world of fear and pain, there are healers you need to seek out and listen to. Twin Flames seems to be picking up that undertaking.

They can do this with a strong balance of being serious with the tough situations in life and letting us know there is joy as you practice and proceed your way to a higher life.

The stories they tell between songs are very personal and open. It feels as if you are just sitting with a close friend, and you can truly be yourself. Songs like, “Human” and “Porchlight” can really recharge your energy knowing you are part of a global community.

Although, I don’t know this song, they reworked a TikTok song called Savage Daughter. Being native, savage can be considered a bad word. In today’s world it could mean being assertive and going for what you want. So, they renamed this song Savage daughter, Savage Son to include the underappreciated and diminished role of the males in today’s world.

“Omen”, is another one of those songs that take you to a different dimension. It felt like a journey into an unknown fog that shares no direction with you, but if you surrender, it will lead you to a higher place.

The surprise for me was the story of the importance of Gord Downie and the Wenjack project and how that really helps open up a new way for all of us to reconnect. They chose to play “Grace Too” and we learned that this song got the blessing from the Tragically Hip. They simply asked this duo to keep in the native part of the song to breathe new life into the meaning of the song.

For those of you who still believe that indigenous music all sounds like a Pow Wow, you have not opened up to what these artists are really doing. Their music can bring you into a space of openness, healing, learning and growth. The styles range throughout the popular music scene. It comes in the form of Folk, Rock, Hip Hop, and Country.
