Horseshoe and Hand Grenades

If you are into mindless and reckless chaos, you missed your opportunity on Tuesday at the Horseshoe when three impulsive bands decided to join forces.

Amelia Earheart’s Sonic Aviary opened this circus with a cast of characters that seemed to be a little act onto themselves.  There was a Minotaur, a ragged gnome, a girl on keyboards that seemed to be playing against her will. There was also a Hawaiian drummer that was filled with fear and loathing.  The leader was a kite singing from an inverted rainbow.

He had the cackle of a demented duck ready for his trip to Peking. His songs had the slipperiness of a rotten banana that slithered  between the audience’s ears.

I seemed to chant this is normal, this is normal, I did turn into the right place. I am Alice in Never Neverland. I am the Wizard of Id. Unfortunately like the itsy witsy spider, I got spat out of the waterspout.

Check this mess of a band:

Thankfully, the next band got on stage, but with a Suicidal Tendencies hat and a ukulele, I had no idea what to expect. With a similar voice to Billy Corgan (Smashing Pumpkins), a surf sound was born.

At least the drummer seemed really happy, and not in that demented way. The Bass player looked like a biker bar hauled his ass to the curb.

These are the Dorkies and they are out to be weird. Even these pieces of strange fruit mentioned they were out weirded by Amelia Earhart. They may not be the weirdest band out there but they certainly are a lot of fun.

Remember school when the teachers would mention the special kids in the class, well they grew up and became Dorks! You might as well start a band.

Their sound has a pinch of everything, a little Rock, mixed with surf, add a little popping punk and you have a great Indie band.

If you ever wondered how do you get a squirrel? Well you climb a tree and act like a nut. This is how the band eats at night.

You want Dorkie photos, here they are:

Lastly, we have veteran punkers, Lucid Smog Disorder. It has been a couple years since I have witnessed their shenanigans, and I was hungry to eyeball them again.

Right away I noticed there was a new Bass player, who joined the band last year. This dude seems like an amazing fit to an already tight punk outfit.

What can I really say about his band except, they are straight up punk with turbo fuel in their blood. They are vicious and fun at the same time. At one point they even introduced a punk reggae song that was really sweet.

After their rant about wanting to kill all the landlords, they did a couple of cover songs to please the audience of new comers. One of the tunes was by the Razorbacks, which I thought was an awesome choice.

Their recklessness had them falling and rolling around on the stage because of their personal slam dancing. Don’t worry, they weren’t mad with each other as they really did kiss and make up. (Check out my photos).

The last two songs of the night may garner some new fans because of their arena rock style to it. They say they are working on a new record. Let’s hope it comes out soon. This band really wants to own the Punk scene in Toronto if not all of Canada!
