La REV(EAL)!

They’re Back!

About a year ago, La Rev moved out of their space at Dundas and Keele to look for a new home.

Well, one year later and we can now celebrate the return of this fine Mexican restaurant that serves the best Margaritas and has live music to enjoy. Their new address is 825 Runnymede Rd, just north of St Clair Ave. Look for the parking lot on the east side.

Sabrina is the owner of this establishment. She grew up in the restaurant business with her family. The original location was there for about 15 years and then it was decided to move to a new location.

The new place is very similar to the old place. The size is very close to the original location and they already had a built in stage at the front of the restaurant. Part of the reason they chose this place was that it once was a karaoke bar. It is still in the Junction neighbourhood and it now has parking. These all seem to be good signs that people can now travel to see some of the finest jazz and blues in this part of town.

The place itself looks very inviting and could hold up to about 40 people. This is a great venue for an intimate evening of music.  Now speaking of intimate music, now that La Rev is back with a new look and a new attitude, they are open for acts to fill some spots.

If you are an act that does a lighter form of jazz, you should send over your information to Booklarev@gmail.com

Trombone Charlotte

This past week, La Rev has been celebrating their grand reopening with live music every night from Wednesday to Sunday. I happen to go on Friday to watch the spontaneous Trombone Charlotte have fun with her audience.

Charlotte brought along her guitar slinging friend, Yiki Wang. He was a very focused player that held the course like a good captain of a ship entering choppy waters at night. Trombone Charlotte is more of the storm who blows by and makes herself known.

Her style of jazz can date back over 100 years with tunes coming from the 1910’s and then move forward to about the 1940’s.

She is even a bit of a perfectionist. She took the French song, La Vie en Rose and sang it in French and English. It wasn’t the original translation that they wrote back in the day. Charlotte took it upon herself to properly translate this French song into English. It sounded prefect.

She was in a great mood, because about half the time she wouldn’t even sing into the mic. She would just belt it out to fill the room with her powerful vocals.

If you have ever seen Charlotte live, you know she tends to go off script often. This was a good night to witness this. She would just be in a different mood in the moment and then throw out a different song. Yiki Wang had his work cut out for him.  It is a good thing they have great chemistry together. It made the entire evening completely fun and easy. Oh yeah, and the margaritas really helped with the overall experience.
