Sub-Sessions 14
BSMT254 was host to another successful Sub-Sessions event and a day after St Patrick’s Day! People still wanted to go out and explore live music. Well, this is an ongoing event that you should attend at least once to see what the buzz is all about.
This time Danny who runs these events put together a 90’s style Alt Rock line-up and here are the results I saw from the front row.
Shel Khan
The first thing I want to say, is if you missed the recent article on her, you could go back and read it here, Sub Sessions 14 and Shel Khan – Blast Toronto
If I had to describe this band, immediately I would say Rock with some fuzzy sounds. Like a good Rock star, Shel Khan asked the audience to take 3 giant steps forward so she could try and melt your face with her sound. Well, she can rock but also follow up with an easy groove that just put the room into a swaying position.
The band aspired to creatively recreate that 90’s Alt Rock sound with those minor chords and lyrics that contained trauma and some damage. This is how the kids rolled back then.
Her set was filled with her early work, and she did mention she has an EP coming out that will explore the more electronic side to her music. Again, read the article and follow and listen to her new EP.
On a lighter note, Shel Khan mentioned she remembered a song when she was about 6 or 7. That is when someone yelled out 6-7! Boy did that receive a lot of moans and boos from the audience. Did they kick him out at that moment?

The band came on and started off a bit odd and choppy. It was like having a disturbing thought looping through your head and concluded with a total meltdown moment…interesting.
Once I located their vibe, I was intrigued with how well they balanced their sound. It was like listening to great 70’s guitar riff mixed with that good old 90’s angst!
They were going for that edgy sound by creating a hard rock cocktail sound with a little twist of (s)lime.
When they got heavier near the end of their set, it was a blend of classic metal meets grunge.
The last two songs were the cincher for me. It was hard and out of control. So, my little piece of advice is to do more of that. You can see a snippet of this on my Instagram page- https://www.instagram.com/reel/DWERVPkDZcz/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
Nozma Live:
Por Flavor
Well, this band started of slow and spacey and built itself into a self-sustained hypnotic state. They finished it off with a glowing pop-cycle…cool huh?
Por Flavor seems to be a band that is willing to explore the space and try out a little jamming to see where they should go next. The best part is this is truly a ride into being present. I had no idea which way this band was going to go and some of those choices were flavourful.
I laughed when someone from the back yelled out, “You’re really good”. I agree, but this band has the potential to be so much more.
They played with different ideas like a tune with a funky disco jam or a song with inner and outer space sounds. They are Pop, Rock and explorers looking for the right ingredients for a great song. They really don’t seem to care how they get there, but they do slide in and make it happen and they are not in a rush to get there. They take on many different genres and mix it up to see what parts fit together. It is like going to the Mandarin blind and picking a bit of everything from the buffet.
Keep exploring guys, you are the right side of the buffet table.
