The Rockpile
The Rockpile has been a dedicated venue for up-and-coming heavy Rocking Musicians for 15 Years. They focus on our local Metal scene as well as brining in international Heavy Metal, Like Chris Holmes from WASP, Green Jelly and Marc Rizzo from Soulfly. They are not many Metal venues around Toronto, so The Rockpile is an important venue here in our city. Plenty of free parking, (That is my cheesy plug for the day).
This night I went there to watch 6 new bands that I have never seen before, but you never know who you are going to love by the end of the evening.
Pinknip
Being the first band on is a tough spot, you have to work hard to pick up just one more fan. Well, this band did work hard and when they found their groove they began to open yourself up to a new experience. They become a solid ball of rock. By the 3rd song they had a Soulfly moment with some tribal metal sounds. Then they moved into a slow and moody piece that felt like a boa constrictor with bad indigestion. Overall, they are a classic metal band with moments of Punk, a touch of thrash and street metal.

Holocene
This band came out screaming! They start off with a lean and mean tightness that chokes the air that you breathe. They slipped into some death metal and eventually began to experiment with different vocal techniques. Think of Killswitch Engage with his 3 styles of singing. There is a bit of Rage against the machine vibe happening as well. This is a band looking for their sound and they are not afraid to try a bunch of them out to define who they are right now. Stick with them to see where they will emerge.

Genital Grinder
There are no apologies from this band as the monster comes out and steps on your nut sack and then goes for the juggler. The drummer is also the lead singer. I guess this band grew up influenced by the Eagles..probably not.
What is pretty cool about this band is they have been a metal band since 1992 in the Philippines and have been Rocking Toronto for the last few years. That is 34 years of metal glory!
What I like about this band is that they are fast, a little bit sloppy, (like a zombie really hungry and eating brains). They power of their sound can still reach the entire room and bitch slap you at the same time.

Human Compost
This is a death metal band that would love to turn your bones into dust and then snort it for breakfast! The guttural vocals of this band sound like they are coming from a recycling plant that is designed just digest your soul into nothingness. In fact, a song like Black breath could really use some industrial mouthwash. I personally loved, “The Brood awakening”. It was nothing short of a purely invasive entity out to decimate your physical make-up. When they leave you, “Decomposed”, they did their job and will move onto the next town for slaughter.

It Cometh
Like a freight train they rolled in on molten tracks. The band looked like they graduated from the demented school of wayward death mongers. Each member was decked out in full make-up and wardrobe. Each of them owns their own menacing character. I would love to see those characters emerge into a more theatrical show. There are not a lot of band doing theatre these days. Blood Opera is the only one that comes to mind. The songs are diverse and the styles of vocals could be both a little operatic and then slip into throat singing with razor blades. They do have a song called Wonder wall, not to be confused with Oasis. This has more of a Wailing Wall theme to it.

Ubruxum
This band is a death metal band that will rattle the filling right out of your head. They are hoping to be paid with gold fillings that they can bring to the dentist. They can trade it in for some serious anesthetic to numb the brain and help them to stop drooling all over the stage.
Their guttural sounds are so low the vibrations cause’s cavities. Even a shot of Novocain won’t help the root canal that is throbbing so hard your temples want to explode.
This boy band from Toronto played one of their top ten single hits called, Axi-Dental. 5 out of 5 dentists recommend this song.
This is a band that likes to cut their teeth on short fast songs. In fact, their brand-new CD has 23 epic songs that probably last for about 2-3 minutes each. But you have to love some of the song titles like, “Clinic in the crackhouse basement”, Blisterine” and their love ballad, “Wormy nerve ending”.
The beauty of this band is they may have invented a new style of music- Mental Dental Metal.
