Weekend of the Snake

The Rockpile

The Rockpile is no stranger to new and heavy music. This evening brought four new bands onto my radar. Devilwitch was the only band that I have seen multiple times. The rest woke me up to new possibilities.

Cruciferous

I found their name intriguing. What would they sound like? Well, on the first song it sounded like a mix of Black Sabbath and Sepultura. That was a good start.

As the band dove into a strong thrash metal set, I could hear bands like Biohazard rearing it nuclear wasted head.

They could also go for a straight forward pumper that is reminiscent of Motorhead. This is a band that you need to watch if your love your classic Thrash sounds.

NVMERALS

With an unexpected cool opening, I was thinking this band may have a more modern sound. Well, I was wrong. They came in with a heavy corroded sound as if Captain Crunch was steering this ship through a murky sea shanty.

This began a small but intense mosh pit with limbs flying out of control. By the 3rd song, the band summoned up a nightmare that attached itself to your tired soul. This one weighed heavily on the listeners.

They did jump to new sounds. They tried a futuristic sound to bring them into the present day. I have to admit, it sounded cool.

I think that the idea of this band trying out new ideas and sound actually brought the crowd closer to the stage.

By the end of their set, they did create one crazy little mosh pit that looked a little dangerous. Now isn’t that what we what from heavy music, a little danger?

Devilwitch

These guys are the real veterans here tonight. This is one of the most intriguing and interesting Metal bands in Toronto today. The intensity of their sound, the cool and shredded guitar solos are worth the drive out to see them.

When you do get to see them, you will quickly find out they love Black Sabbath!

When they first came on, they hit us like a battering ram. It was like really pissing off your Italian wife while she is holding a roiling pin.

Once you got over your initial beating, you became, “Children of the Grave”. Yes they love Black Sabbath!

They paced their set perfectly, because it flew right by. They finished their set by bringing out- Cheme Monsta who added his rapping skills to finish off this molten metal set!

A Mission Reverse

This was the debut show for- A Mission Reverse. They were genuinely excited to finally be in front of people and trying to melt our faces.

Well, after a spoken opening from an old movie, they dropped like an atomic bomb and exploded some of their heaviest riffs on this new crowd.

They second song they went to the streets and beat us like the vicious dogs that we were. This band was not trying to hide anything as they were looking for ways to keep us off balance.

These songs got the audience curious enough to move forward and get a closer look at our tormentors.

With their high energy show and a high energy Bass player, these guys looked like veterans already. This is a band that has to get a janitor up on stage to mop up the sweat that poured out from this band.

The mosh pit was filled up with those three guys who completely took over the room with their spastic moves.

Their last song was called, “Heart Attack”, and if this song did not give you a coronary, you may be dead already!

Night of the Snake

I kept hearing throughout the evening that this band is really good. What I began to watch intrigued me and I had to try and figure this band out. They started with the classic, “What’s up Etobicoke”!

Then like a true viper, they lashed out and injected their poison in you right away. It was downright vicious.

The singer is a skinny tall blonde that surprises you with that low guttural voice. That voice should not be able to come out of that body.

They produce a razor sharp performance with the attitude of the youth.  I would say they, Smell like Teen Venom!

This energy created the best mosh pit of the evening with a bunch of flailing bodies throwing around their limbs lie a piece of human farming equipment.

They tend to stray away from the typical Metal moves and lean into a wild spastic animal approach. If Heavy Metal and Mick Jagger were fused together, it would look like this band.

I look forward to what other antics this band can produce over the next few years.
