Tom Waits for a spiritual experience

Tom Waits for a spiritual experience

There is something special about walking into Castro’s Lounge, at 2116E Queen Street and sitting down to have a pint and listen to a band called Tom Waits Appreciation Congregation. This happens every first Tuesday of the month.

They open the ritual with Earth Died Screaming. Nice apocalyptic opening. They soon get into Rain Dogs, 2:19 and Clap Hands, which washes over you and you forget about the outside world. The second half gets only better with songs like Swordfishtrombone, a couple of different Rain songs, and the classic Downtown Trian.

They go into the rumpus Big Black Maria, gives you some Cold Water and drive you in their OL’55. They leave you starving in the belly of the Whale.

I think the moment I enjoyed the most was watching 3 women dancing and enjoying every song. One of these participants was a 19 year old who was listening to this music for the first time. I believe I may see her again next month. In the meantime, check out Castro’s Lounges event calendar for more spiritual events. http://castroslounge.com/events/
