Lily Frost
Lily Frost made a rare appearance at Castro’s on Sunday. What made her come out the cold and give us a fever in a small, enclosed environment?
Lily has been working on a new song that she collaborated with Mitch Willer and Jason Ball, and their efforts spawned a Nightbird. It is a song about Lillith. This is the woman who came before Eve. Lillith was banished from the Garden of Eden for disobeying Adam.
Hearing this song live for the first time definitely stopped me in my tracks as this slow and sorrow filled song encompassed both a historical time with a spiritual awakening.

Castro’s
I am really glad I showed up early. By the time the show was going on, it was standing room only. In fact, I was lucky enough to sit beside her parents who drove three hours to watch their daughter perform. Lily also had friends that came from all over to see this show.
The show started off with Nicol Roberts and the boys doing an opening instrumental. As the show was hitting its stride, the blend of a country sounding guitar mixed with soft jazz music and a hint of Christmas music was floating around the room. This is a very strange blend of sounds that worked so well together, it has become something synonymous with Lily Frost. She has an innate ability to take a variety of sounds and piece them together like a well needed blanket coming off a loom.
A song like, “You’re my thrill” sounded like something out of a classic James Bond movie.
The classic jazz song, “Fever”, felt like being part of a steam bath.
The crowd finally had a moment of loosening up with her song, “Cure for Loneliness”. Apparently, all you need to do is dance, and that is what the room did.
Her version of “Don’t Explain” had a dark and unapologetic vibe to it as Lily seem to take her power back during this version.
Bang Bang by Nancy Sinatra seemed a little more lethal as Nicol Roberts cut his solos like a fine surgeon.
By the end of her set, the room was fully engaged in dancing and showing how much fun this evening was turning out. By the last song, the band played their outro music while Lily and her Mom cut a rug just to celebrate life. And isn’t that what we love to do now and again, celebrate life through music.
