I recently found this small bar in Kensington market called Lola. This is an earthy place that believes in helping fledgling musicians have a place to gain exposure to their musical sound. They invited me out to see a duet called Lazy Days.
Lazy Days consists of two guitar players named Del Cowsill and Emma Plant( No relationship to Robert). They mentioned they started this band seven months ago and are working on a lot of original songs.
In fact, one of the songs that caught my ear right away is called “Fireball”. Clearly this song is about the alcohol by the same name. Hey everybody sings about Tequila, Scotch, Bourbon, Beer, why not Fireball which has its own sense of consequences
Another original Song is called, “Daydream Believer”, and has nothing to do with Neil Diamond. What I discovered is their sound has sweetness to it and a sense of hope.
They did a few covers which added the darker side of the evening as they pulled out a little Nirvana, Foo Fighters. I really enjoyed their Steve Miller cover of “Rock N Me”.
The only way I could describe then right now is that they are a post hippie folk duo and Emma has a smiley face on her guitar. They could be that pair you would find amongst the many Grateful Dead fans as they travelled around the country with the band.
They mentioned they have only one song on Spotify called “The Switch. When I listen to their harmonies, I find them wistful and sharp and clean.
I think everyone’s favourite moment was when Dell’s phone was ringing in the middle of one of their songs. For some strange reason it just seemed to fit at the right time. The audience will have to thank Oliver for having perfect timing. Maybe he can be the newest member of this band.
Actually, they will be adding a drummer to their sound next Thursday at Lola. In fact, this pair can be seen there every Thursday starting around 9pm. The admission is free, and they are a very charming pair to hang out with. Go see them and see if Oliver will make another appearance.
The address for Lola is 40 Kensington Ave.
