Lady of the Moon is the sophomore record from Kailan McGee. She decided to stretch herself and create a concept album. This record follows the phases of the moon with 8 songs for 8 moon phases and is about the mythological creatures and sightings in the Black Forest of Southwestern, Germany. I wonder if one of those creatures is a crazy chicken.
The style is a fantasy and mystical sounds that dances through both your romantic soul and paints visual imagery for you to get lost in. It reminds me of all those sword and sorcery movies growing up, but from a female perspective.
The fine details of each song really add a lot of weight to each song. It really fills out each idea and gives it a rich tapestry of emotions that you don’t often hear with young artists.
What makes this record work so well, is that Kailen’s vocals suit this style of music flawlessly. Similar artists that have the same kind of style would be Loreena McKennitt and Kate Bush during her Sensual World days.
While most young singers are singing about their first heartbreak and losing their first pet, like me, Kailen shifts her focus and creates a world of fantasy to get immersed in.
Songs like “The Black Forest”, just traverses itself through that famous German Forest to seek out something fantastic.
“Lady of the Moon” continues with a smooth and wistful openness that seeks out a stronger connection.
“The Legend of the wild moon master”, creates an anticipation of what is coming but doesn’t understand of what truly is coming.
This is an album of escapism and wonder for the listener who needs to take a short metaphysical journey inside the depth of imagination.
To truly surround yourself in this journey go to her Spotify page and listen to it yourself. This could be the mental vacation that you have been looking for.
