Interview with Nicky Koro

I had the pleasure of hanging out with Nicky Koro for a few minutes before a show he did at the Burdock brewery. You can go back and read my review about that evening. I only had a few minutes to ask him questions, so here we go with our very fast conversation.

Blast:Who is Nicky Koro in a simple paragraph?

NK: Nicky Koro is my solo project and is a blend of Power Pop mixed with some alternative music. It is a mixture of all my favourite music.

Blast: And you favourite music would be?

NK: Weezer, The Misfits, The Beatles, but everybody says the Beatles so let’s add the Replacements.

What message is Nicky Koro sending out today?

NK: Follow your dreams and do what you love. Don’t let people get in your ear, F^(k the system and the man.  I want people to see that I am going for it and hopefully that inspires them to do what they love to do.

What have been your favourite spots in Toronto to play?

NK: In the Junction, I love 3030 even though they are shutting down now. The Monarch Tavern,  Baby G’s, Houndstooth. I will be doing a show at Adelaide Hall soon because I am in a Weezer cover band and we are opening for an Oasis cover band.

Nicky went on to describe his journey on how he got to where he is today.

NK: My hope is that the people who come to my Weezer shows will want to come to my solo shows as well. I am not the strongest musicians, not like these guys in my band who have been doing this most of their lives. I went off and worked in television doing kid shows and then worked with environmental films but in the back of my mind I was watching my friends and really wanted to get back to playing music.

Blast; If you could play your dream gig in Toronto where would it be?

NK: Oh, that is a good one. Massey Hall would be the iconic one.  Then the band joked that maybe they should play The Rogers Centre or Scotia bank Arena or even Bud Stage.  If you are going to dream, Dream big.

Blast: I went down the line of the three members of Nicky Koro and asked them each, who would be the band you would want to open for.

Owen: My taste leans into the Rockabilly scene and 1950’s music. So I would choose Rev. Horton Heat or the Flat Duo Jets.

Nicky; I think Weezer would be my answer. But just to be different let’s go with Jeff Rosenstock.

Lee: I’ve got the cool answer, Guided by Voices. And the band went wild with that answer.

I continued to casually talk with the band as other band members walked in and out of the green room in the Burdock. And yes, the room is green. The three bands I met that night; I believe all qualify for a spot at next year’s Gussapalooza.  I like mentioning this festival to Indie bands because it is a great platform for band to build a bigger audience.

I added a poster of where Nicky Koro will be playing soon, so if this little article intrigued you, I suggest you go out and discover this artist for yourself. If you love Weezer, talk to Nicky and see when his other band will be playing. Go out and discover your music!
