The first time I saw Half Past Four, this band was a bunch of spastics on a caffeine high. They wanted to try some different kind of progressive rock stuff and had a sound that was not very easy to listen to. Move forward a few years and they are still trying to keep their sound very quirky and strange. But now they sound a lot tighter with great time signatures and odd vocal gymnastics that may have you scratching your head, because it is not mainstream. That is why I enjoy this band, they are not afraid to experiment and put you in uncomfortable places because you actually have to listen and dissect their vibrancy.
They played The Hard Luck Bar on Saturday with a healthy crowd waiting to hear what they would do next. Well what they got was Half Past Four’s new EP- Land of the Blind. Now I will not go into a lot of details about this new release, because that will be a separate article in the near future.
Their performance seemed to have a lot more confidence and control that will impress an audience of both art students and prog heads. Lead vocalist, Kyree Vibrant was filled with vim and vigor as she played with many different moods and movements to keep the viewers entertained. At times she seemed a little lost when she got into the groove of a song, and then became completely engaged to let us know she wants to connect.
They played all five songs off their new EP with a solid wall of confidence and enthusiasm. I am going to let the cat out of the bag…the neighbours may holler, Half Past Four is higher than the Eiffel Tower. They do an excellent version of Max Webster’s- Toronto Tontos. It is on the new Ep. For the true Proggers out there, this is a band you should add to your repertoire. They have enough original ideas and prowess to keep you wanting to come back for more. They are peculiar and technically savvy to keep you satiated.
