Billy Joel Hits Etobicoke!

Billy Joel Hits Etobicoke!

It’s Friday night and Timothy’s Pub is packed with the neighbourhood regulars waiting to party out to some classic Billy Joel tunes. These tunes are provided to you by the talented Leo Franz, who had a three year hiatus from giving Toronto something to sing about. This night the singing went back and forth between the band and the joyous crowd. The other members who added their special touch was, Christina Melanie on Keyboards, Dave Bayley on Guitar, Matt Ross on Drums, Bob Basa slappin da Bass, and Pol Coussee on horns.

They opened the set with Piano Man and The Entertainer. They stuck to mostly the 70’s Billy Joel, focusing on the classic album, “The Stranger”.  Leo got a little bit livelier with each song, and that  got the crowd in a party mood that kept Timothy’s Pub jumping. I found out later that Leo was battling the flu and had a sore throat, but nobody noticed the entire night. This is a sign of a true professional.

Other classis’ that were performed was, “Only the good die young”, as well as “You may be right”, and “It’s still Rock and Roll”. One of the highlights was the flute solo on the Song, “Zanzibar”.

The second set was mixed with some later material like, “Big Shot”, and “We didn’t start the fire”. They did slide in the jazzy hit, “New York State of mind”. Leo finished his set with, “Piano Man”, the full song. But it only got better because the crowd was satisfied with the second set, not knowing there was a third set. This coming from a sick man fighting the flu. You got to see him live because he gives it, his all.

Leo and company go for a third set which includes songs like, “Easy Money”, “Pressure”, and, “Allentown”.  So far the crowd has not left the dance floor and have no reason to leave the building anytime soon, but the group, finally finish with, “She’s got a way” and everyone feels a satiated.

Leo took three years off from doing shows like this one. I had a chance to talk to him and he wants to do this more often. So if you are a Billy Joel fan, this is something you need to check out and have some fun with. This guy will not disappoint you.
